What is Claude Cowork and who should use it?

By El WongJune 12, 20267 minute read

Claude Cowork is a desktop app from Anthropic built for handing off knowledge work to AI. Instead of chatting back and forth, you give Cowork a task and let Claude work with your files, folders and connected tools to finish the job. The best fit: solopreneurs, small business owners and non-technical professionals with repeating work they want off their plate.

I use Cowork to run parts of my own business every day, and I coach clients through their first 90 days with the tool. This guide gives you the plain language version: what Cowork does, where the magic lives and an honest take on who should adopt now and who should wait.

What is Claude Cowork?

Think of the difference between asking a colleague a question and handing a colleague a task. The Claude chat app answers questions. Cowork takes tasks.

In practice, you point Cowork at a folder on your computer, describe an outcome and Claude does the work: reading documents, creating files, updating spreadsheets and following multi-step processes through to a finished result. You review the output instead of producing the first version yourself. The app is built for non-developers, so no code and no technical setup beyond installing the desktop app.

Cowork is evolving quickly, with features and availability changing often. For current details on plans and capabilities, check claude.com and the official Claude help centre.

What makes Cowork different from regular AI chat?

Three things change the game compared to a chat window:

What are skills and why do they matter?

A skill is a folder of instructions, templates and examples teaching Claude your way of doing a specific job. Build a skill once and Claude follows your process every time, with your branding, your formats and your rules.

Here is what this looks like in my business, with real numbers:

The shift is bigger than speed. Skills turn your business knowledge into an asset working every day, even on the admin you used to dread.

Who should use Claude Cowork?

Cowork rewards people with repeating, document-heavy work and no team to delegate to:

Who should wait?

An honest list, because the wrong tool wastes your money:

How to start with Cowork in your first week

  1. Pick one repeating task you do at least weekly. Invoicing is a common first win.
  2. Do the task once with Cowork by describing your process in plain words, as if briefing a new assistant.
  3. Note every correction you make. Those corrections become your instructions.
  4. Ask Claude to turn your process and corrections into a skill.
  5. Run the skill on next week's task and refine. Most clients hit a reliable workflow by run three.

One task, one skill, one week. Confidence with Cowork compounds the same way all AI confidence does: small wins on real work.
